Although initially the Garden State MLS service in NJ appeared to work with Safari there are limitations.

While the Middlesex MLS system won’t even start up on a non-Internet Explorer browser, the GSMLS starts up and allows listings to be viewed. Some editing and searches seem to not work as they produce an error that says that Internet Explorer is required to be able to complete the task.

Please keep this in mind if you planned on editing or changing the status of your listing using a Blackberry, Droid, iPad, Safari, or Firefox Browser.

New N Router Not Any Faster? 10/11/2010

So you purchased a new N-router to take advantage of the new N – card in your laptop. You excitedly hook it up and…..its not any faster. What happened?

Well what router manufacturers don’t readily volunteer is that your wireless network is only as fast as your slowest connection.

Example: Your speeding along at N speed and your child starts up their older laptop and connects at G. Now the whole wireless network is at G speed. Then you send a print job to that old wireless printer you’ve been trying to get the most out of before you replace it. Most of the wireless printers up until a year ago ran on wireless B.  So now your brand new equipment capable of Ferrari speeds is spurting along like a Moped.

Again the whole network is only as fast as the slowest piece. Keep this in mind when your wireless PS3 stops streaming video when someone prints in the other room. This is also why wireless hotspots seem to grind to a halt when someone with an old computer connects at the coffee shop.

There are routers that isolate the older bands and keep them from affecting the entire wireless network. These routers are almost double the price of a normal router. However, given the choice of changing all of your wireless computers and printers to the fastest speed (very expensive) or buying a single expensive router; picking the router may be more prudent.

The beta version of Internet Explorer 9 is out. Middlesex MLS has warned against upgrading as the Marketlinx software probably will not work correctly with the release.

Also, IE9 is apparently not compatible with Windows XP and has reduced functionality under Vista. So apparently to use the new browser there is a forced upgrade to Windows 7.

Topproducer and Mac 08/28/2010

The setup for a Topproducer account needs to be done on a PC through IE or Firefox. After setup is complete most of the functionality of Topproducer can be used through Safari on a Mac, iPhone or iPad. As I delve deeper into Topproducer I’ll post what does and doesn’t seem to work through Safari.

After looking for about 15 minutes for a way to change the Topproducer password for my account I sent an email to the technical support. Apparently the only way to change a password is through the “Forgot Password” link on the login page. Instructions are then given to you for changing your password with your secret questions. There is no preference in profile settings to change your password.

Administrator Users Windows 7 08/21/2010

If you are running Windows 7 or Vista, make sure to create more than one administrator account on your computer. A user profile can get locked for a variety of reasons including bad password entry. If the account gets locked, the only quick way to unlock it is with another administrator user account.

Therefore make at least two administrator accounts.

The current free offering of Malwarebytes does a very good job of finding and eliminating spyware on a windows machine. Just download, install and scan. You may be surprised at what it finds. Plus you can’t beat the price.

Printing 07/31/2010

The first real snag in the change over to Mac has occurred. Printing to the Ricoh printer and Ricoh Multi-Function Copier does not happen. The latest divers off the Ricoh site do not allow printing with OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) even though they say they do.  At least I couldn’t make it work.

The Mult-Function Canon copier worked fine. The HP bluetooth worked fine. The Brother and Okidata color lasers worked fine. The Brother Inkjet Multifunction worked fine too. Even the little Brother Label Printer works without a snag.

The Ricoh’s not so fine.
